Donating Vehicles - What to Look Out for

Vehicle donation or car donation is not unheard of in the United Sates and has grown in popularity over the years. Nowadays many charities have such programs associated with them. It goes without saying that not all charities are the same and different charities follow different rules and procedures.
Many people have at least one rust bucket or eyesore in front of their homes they want to get rid off but just don't know how to. Most people are also not sure if anyone would want their old vehicle and so they just don't go ahead with it. There could be nothing further from the truth. Believe it or not people do need your help!

In fact most people who donate their cars when they need to get rid of them for good. If the donated vehicle is in decent working order and just needs some cosmetic repairs it may be just fixed up and donated directly to a family who really needs it.
If nothing can be salvaged from the vehicle, for any reason whatsoever, its components may be sold off separately as scrap. Metal could be sold off or recycled. You should also consider the fact that all this was possible through a single phone call without the hassle of putting an ad in the newspaper, haggling with prospective buyers et al.

There are some things you must keep in mind as well. You might have heard that donations give you an opportunity to write-off tax. Most people are lured in by sales pitches of this type. The process does not allow you to write off more tax than what the charity gets out of it! So please be careful in writing off. In essence, your tax deduction is limited to the amount of money the charitable organization actually receives from selling the vehicle.

There are also greater tax deductions in case of significant use and material improvements. Significant use is defined differently in many places but roughly is the considered as the regular use of the vehicle. Material improvement may be major repairs or improvements which increase the value of the vehicle by a substantial amount.

Moreover, you, as a responsible member of society, need to choose which charity your charity wisely and what you want to endorse. In addition, it would also be wise to keep all your receipts and documents in case of scrutiny. Most charities also help people to fill out documents. Personally, I think that this could be as dangerous as it is beneficial. So be on your guard and consult people who have donated before to avoid hardship later on.
